Joan Bettie was discovered by porn pioneer, Alex DeRenzy, who befriended her because he was intrigued by her disability. You see, Joan had only a stump for a left leg due to a birth defect. She was a very wholesome looking girl with nice features and a nice body despite the leg, and DeRenzy decided to write a film around her. After the script was ready he presented it to her. She saw it as an oppritunity to help others with disabilities by portraying herself in a porn film, letting others know that the disabled had the same desires and wants as other people. He christened her ‘Long Jean Silver’ and the movie of the same name came out to mixed reviews, but all the critics were unanimous about the courage of the star. Jean was soon flooded with offers, but other than her work in ‘Desire for Men’ where she was billed again with the moniker, she never used the stump as a gimmick on screen. In fact just the opposite. She always utilized a prosthesis when appearing on screen, and it was always covered up by clothes, or leggings, high boots etc etc. It was never shown.She even dropped the ‘Long’ part of her screen name and simply went by Jean Silver. She felt it was important to show that people like her could overcome adversity and have a healthy sexual appetite as a human, and NOT a disabled person. She did the same with all of her photo shoots as well. Jean Silver made about 20 films altogether in her career, before calling it quits. After her retirement, she became a columnist in various magazines where she wrote about sex for the disabled & handicapped. Today she is a touring speaker for many groups on the subject commanding big bucks for her stories & insights, and has been instrumental in helping get legislation passed for the handicapped & disabled on both local & national levels.
